Chiang Mai is the largest city in northern Thailand, situated in a mountainous region about 700 kilometers north of Bangkok. Founded in 1296 as the capital of the Lanna Kingdom, it is known for its moated old city, hundreds of Buddhist temples, and its annual Yi Peng lantern festival.
